Adventures in Touring The Pacific Northwest from Canada to San Francisco, 1940 vol. 3

An interesting collection of advertisements from the late 1930’s to 1940, descriptions of various locations as well as the hotel prices, some histories, as well as hunting facts. The majority of this covers Oregon with about a third covering Northern California. Several hotels highlighted the fact that they were completely fireproof (The Hotel Olympian, p.18 & Hotel Benton swore it was “absolutely fireproof” p40). On page 19 there was an establishment called the Chicken Coop which specialized in being air cooled and having Southern as well as pan fried chicken. I don’t know about you, but I am not sure that I want to stay the night at a place called the Chicken Coop. Might insinuate something negative. And then the were was the Weed Hotel in California mentioned on page 53. This place would have been a hit in the 60’s but for a honeymoon in 1940? I can imagine the new Mrs. calling home to mother. “Oh, yes, Mother, we spent a lovely evening at the Hotel Weed. You would not believe the foliage. Then again, this IS California.” Rates also depended upon whether or not a room came with a bath. That would go over well by today’s standards.
